What does breast augmentation do?
Breast augmentation increases the projection, cleavage, and size of the breast. Many women need more volume in the breast to achieve even a normal profile. Problems with body image, self-confidence, and clothes fitting properly may be corrected.
How is the size of the implant determined?
Most breast augmentation is in the 200-350 cc. range. The larger breast implants tend to make the breast look less natural. The same size placed on each side may look different secondary to rib asymmetry or curvature of the spine (scoliosis). One breast is often larger than the other before surgery. Placing different sized implants may correct some of this asymmetry. Testing real breast implants pre-operatively will help you decide on the optimal size for you.
Where are breast implants placed?
The most common location is under the pectoralis (chest wall) muscle just above the ribs. Some studies indicate less risk of capsule formation using this approach. A smoother contour occurs by having the muscle and normal breast tissue covering the implant. The other option, above the muscle, may be of benefit if there is more loose skin. Incisions may be made under the breast, around the areola or in the armpit, depending on the individual situation. Each has its advantages.

How safe are breast implants?
Since the original silicone breast implant in 1963, or the saline implant in 1965, much research and testing has been done. The FDA now approves both saline and silicone breast implants. Speculation concerning breast cancer or auto-immune disease associated with silicone breast implants has been proven false. What if the breast implant breaks?
The silicone implants usually have the silicone trapped by the fibrous capsule that surrounds the implant. Replacement fees may be reduced by manufacturers in the first few years or covered by optional extended warranties in later years. Where is the breast implant surgery performed?
All breast augmentation is performed in our private operating suites. There are two fully equipped operating rooms certified by AAAASF. We have certified OR nurses, surgical technicians, anesthesia providers, and recovery room nurses. The entire surgery is performed by Dr. Hobbs.
How is the breast implant surgery performed?
A general anesthetic of one to two hours allows completion of the surgery while you are asleep. All patients have small pumps on their feet during surgery to improve circulation in the legs and reduce risks of blood clots in the legs due to immobilization. After one hour post-operative recovery time most people are ready to go home. Antibiotic coverage is given to all breast augmentation patients just before, during, and after surgery to minimize risk of infection. All sutures in the skin are dissolvable and do not require removal.
