About Dr. Hobbs
Dr. Roy Hobbs graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1979 with Honors Standing and membership in the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Society. His general surgery training was at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada and his plastic surgery training at the University of Louisville, Kentucky where he received Outstanding Surgical Resident of the Year Award. A one-year surgery fellowship was then completed at the University of Sydney, Australia. At that time, he organized their first fresh anatomical research laboratory in 1987/1988.
Dr. Hobbs was board certified as a specialist in Plastic Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1986 and the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1992. The Surgery of the Hand Certification was obtained in 1999 and renewed in 2006.
Currently, Dr. Hobbs is Director of the Western Carolina Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic and Treasurer of the South Carolina Society of Plastic Surgeons. For the past 10 years he has also been teaching Residents, Nurses, and Certified Surgical Technicians. Three times he has received Teacher of the Year award from the Residents. He has served as faculty at educational programs in the USA and multiple locations overseas. Over 10 years were spent in Northern Canada working in hand and plastic surgery.
Each year Dr. Hobbs spends 2-4 weeks performing volunteer surgery in other countries. These have included China, India, Nepal, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Dominican Republic, Panama, Ecuador, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Canada and Australia. Surgeries, such as cleft lip and palate repairs are life transforming. In many countries, without a cleft lip repair, the individual is often not able to have a job or get married.
Dr. Hobbs maintains membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Society, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, the American Medical Association, and the South Carolina Society of Plastic Surgeons.
